Boring Installation

 

Boring is the chief technique employed in collecting and interpreting subsurface soil composition, soil conditions, and structure. Our drillers bore holes approximately 4” in diameter, in order to analyze its profile, bearing capacity, and depth. By breaking into the sediment our engineers can ascertain whether or not the ground given is conducive to the proposed plan.

Test Pits

 

Performed before construction begins, test pits are a minimally invasive excavation of the selected construction area. The ground of a test (trial) pit is dug up by our excavation technicians (both manually and mechanically) in order to examine the condition and stability of the adjacent property’s foundation.

Optical Monitoring

 

It is necessary to perform optical monitoring in any surrounding properties that may be affected by the construction on-site, particularly in the case of underpinning work concerning existing buildings. Any potential shifts experienced by a neighboring structure can be surveyed and tracked during this process. The data we gather while monitoring, is used as a tool to alert your contractor, and engineer of potentially dangerous conditions or construction practices, and to provide you with the necessary data to prevent or mitigate damage due to your construction work.

Crack Monitoring

 

Crack monitoring involves the installation of optical crack gages in order to surveillance and record any differences in the size and width of the cracks discovered along with noting any patterns that may appear. Our engineers use Avonguard’s Standard Tell-Tale Crack Monitors and Concrete Crack Monitors to accurately monitor the measurements of each crack. For cracks developing in the corners of the monitored structure, Corner Crack Tell-Tale monitors are utilized instead.

Vibration Monitoring

 

The observation and detection of misalignment, imbalance or looseness is crucial to preventing possible failure in any load-bearing structure. In studying the vibration measurements, our team carefully places seismographs every 50 feet in the neighboring area to record changes in amplitude, frequency, and intensity. In order to avert an oversight, these measurements are used throughout the construction process. 

Pre/Post Construction Surveys

 

Implementing pre and post-construction surveys are key to lowering risk and liability in the event a claim is filed by an adjacent structure stating damages were incurred as a result of ongoing construction activity. During both the pre and post surveying process, our team of experts record the site’s surrounding area in order to document the conditions prior to and following construction. As a visual aid for comparison, high definition photographs are taken during both stages. In addition to media, the pre-construction survey includes vibration monitoring and installation of optical crack gages.

Monitoring Wells

 

During the boring process the location and depth of water levels present must be chartered. When an underground water reservoir, aquifer, forms between impermeable material, such as bedrock, monitoring wells are developed in order to track the groundwater levels and used to analyze the water quality itself. These wells also assist our engineers in assessing flow behavior and measuring the porosity of surrounding material.

Geotechnical Investigation

 

Prior to construction the geologic elements of the surface and subsurface of the designated site must be investigated. Combined with decades of experience and innovative equipment, our engineers provide a thorough review of the proposed structure’s needs and an evaluation of required material properties. Subsurface exploration, soil sampling, and laboratory analysis are some processes used within our investigation to help determine if there is a viable foundation and the ideal structural design based on our evaluation.
